Welcome to “Behind the Square” stories! Here we want to share our energy and accomplishments with our friends, clients, and partners. In this first edition, we tell you the stories of these first thrilling months at The Square.

The Square doesn´t wait for things to happen. Our DNA is all about fighting to make dreams come true and to celebrate and value each achievement. And it was with this spirit, a smile on the face and willing to win, that…

The Square was born...

Everything started last Summer. The “bug” for entrepreneurship was asleep, but it finally woke up. Since the very beginning, we wanted a simple office where we could do things well and with a lot of passion.

Becoming one of the most respectful communication offices in Portugal is our medium-term goal and we know that only with a strong team of fighters this can be possible. We love what we do, and we want to add real and measurable value to our clients.

It didn’t take long for Sofia to give her testimony…

Sofia was invited to come to NOVA FCSH, the faculty where she studied, to take part in the “Conversas (COM) professionais” event. Together with other guests, she talked with Communication students giving her best advice about what the market is looking for in recent-graduated students. Perseverance and hard work were the keywords.

In October we conquered the fashion world…

From internet to television, we placed a Portuguese emergent designers platform on everyone’s lips… and since then its founders Ana Cravo and João Figueiredo are overwhelmed with the requests to share their testimony about how they’re changing Portuguese designers market.

In November, we got out of The Square to visit the Web Summit…

Entrepreneurial spirit and resilience to walk the path of stones are part of our DNA. So, we couldn’t miss the biggest conference on technology and entrepreneurship in the world.

As we didn’t have the chance to take part in the meetings, we decided to stand out in a more creative way: we took The Square to the Web Summit. We took advantage of our PR capacities and showed to global startups and big companies what we do best: placing great companies and ideas on the most relevant media outlets.

We took a poster – bigger than us –and photographed 60 participants from several countries. We raise 60 news “squares” (i.e. visit cards) and schedule 10 meetings: mission accomplished.

… and had a very peculiar neighbour: a toilet! …and we couldn’t avoid communicating it.

Imagine how an agency can be creative but simple at the same time? Yes, it is possible. Right next to us and for the second consecutive year, there were some Imagineers who brought a toilet to the Web Summit and sat a lot of entrepreneurs. This year even the Poop was there to help entrepreneurs unload their creativity.

A toilet?

December was a very dynamic month: Sara São Miguel entered the game…

Life has many twists and turns, and the destiny put together again Sara São Miguel, Sara Proença and Sofia Pereira. Like the co-founders, Sara is only happy when challenged. We promised her that she would be exposed every day to many different realities and she accepted the challenge. Before joining The Square, Sara worked in sports communication and in the video games industry.

… to put the best and most disruptive shin protectors in the Champions League.

Finishing a great year with substantial growth and predicting an even better 2018, SAK Project ended 2017 very well referred by the Portuguese media. SAK Project is now getting ready to continue placing the unrivaled shin protections in the legs of the best football players in the world.

At peak time, we also introduced Portuguese people to a new mobility alternative…

And we drove Zé Francisco to TV, waking up the Portuguese with a live explanation of how Shareacar - the “Airbnb of cars” - works. This new car sharing mobility platform sped up its growth with The Square and we’re sure it will go further.

Finally, on Christmas Day, we got Housers to introduce itself live, entering Portuguese houses…

2017 finished and it was memorable…

The worlds of fashion and housing crowdfunding were love at first sight and the beginning of a lifelong journey, we hope. On the way, we also gave a ride to our friend Zé Francisco and we did a “pit stop” at Portugal’s most disruptive agency that frequently provokes us to think outside the box. All this zigzagging requires the best protection, so at the end of this road, we did an accurate hat-trick in Viseu.

and 2018 is already starting with great news.

The Square is starting 2018 with new passengers onboard: from the banking sector to technology consulting, from mobility platforms to the restaurant of a duke… The Square intends to go further, but always with sustainability and by conquering the respect of the ones who choose us as drivers of their communication challenges. On our side, all we can do is to remain as committed and rigorous without never losing our way and strict principles.

The hard work had already started on January 2nd.

Are you curious? We’ll tell you more in Behind The Square #2.

See you soon!

The Square Team

2018

In the 1st quarter of 2018, we kept on proving that we are an ambitious team growing daily, not only in number but also in knowledge, expertise, excellence and professionalism. Our daily routine is far from being boring and we never turn our backs on the challenges brought by our clients! Our daily routine is far from being boring and we never turn our backs on the challenges brought by our clients! Behind The Square #2, proudly and with great effort, presents the most remarkable stories of our recent evolution.

The year began on wheels…

Based in Estonia and already operating in 23 countries, Taxify has arrived to Portugal. David Ferreira da Silva explained to the Portuguese population why it made sense to expand this platform to our country. Taxify’s presence on the road did not go unnoticed.

Giving a ride to a Duque (duke)

From the gastronomical experience to the location, everything is worth knowing in the space of “duke” Rui Rebelo. Evasões, Marketeer and Máxima, among others, met and discovered the Chef’s instinctive cuisine and shared travel stories from the restaurant that is conquering the hearts of Lisbon locals.

Not even technology escaped from our attention

Helping one of the leading technological players worldwide to position themselves in Portugal has been our mission. Of note is the strong commitment in the national territory and the installation of the Centre of Excellence, generating job opportunities in country that is wanted to become more promising every day.

Speaking of technology…

Two years ago, a new start-up factory was born and The Square did not let the date be forgotten, especially because this is no ordinary factory. Its mission is to attract talent, develop businesses and invest in them: a “company builder studio” for creating ideas in the areas of retail, cybersecurity and telecommunications.

Without ever forgetting culture…

The international theatre festival Periferias, a festival that unites people through performative arts, allowed us to broaden horizons. From theatre to television, Periferias performed for SIC Notícias, RTP 2, TVI and RTP África.

From the North to The Square

Márcia Carabineiro came from Macedo de Cavaleiros and brought the Northern accent to The Square. With a special love for cultural events production and a great ability for multitasking, Márcia is creative and full of will to embrace new challenges – her energy identifies with The Square’s profile of not sitting idly by and dedicating 100% to everything she does.

Still from the last few months…

We let ourselves be carried away by the wonderful adventures of The Wanderlust and introduced its founder to the young Portuguese.

We celebrated a partnership between Garrett McNamara and Yamaha WaveRunners with an event involving a lot of sea and companionship, in Nazaré.

What do the next months hold for us?

In The Square we are excited with the long road ahead of us. From travel agencies and start-ups to the innovative world of technology, we see no limits to our work! In the upcoming months, there will be new challenges in the world of surfing, music festivals and the wonderful adventure that is to discover the world.

We believe that the quality of our work, rigorous and dedicated, will bring a lot of opportunities and position us as one of the most respected public relations agencies in the country. Through our journey, we like to celebrate every victory and we take the trust that everyone that follows us places in The Square seriously.

Stay tuned for the next issue of Behind The Square.

Until then!

Behind The Square #3

And… we don’t stop… Many new paths have come our way, some were wanted, some were unexpected and others were shown to us by people: when we are recommended, we feel that we are in the right direction… In this Behind The Square #3 we share our latest work with the certainty that we still have a long walk to make.

We reinforced ourselves with technology…

It is being named as the next Portuguese unicorn: the company of software development to contact centers, founded by two young Portuguese. With headquarters in the United States, this company has been revolutionizing its sector.

… to recover from the magic of flowers…

It was Spring and everything was blossoming when we embraced Colvin and launched it into the Portuguese market. The Spanish startup for ordering and delivering flowers online, has come to innovate a practically stagnated sector…

We joined the angels (of businesses)

The APBA – Associação Portuguesa de Business Angels promoted, at the beginning of June, it’s annual event, the Spring Investment Dinner, that gathers around 150 of their associates to honor personalities with national and international impact and to highlight the most innovative startup…

And we went to the theater

After the Periferias festival, we arrived to “Fim de Partida”. Though far from the end, regarding the work this theater company of Sintra. The play – originally “Fin de Partie”, written in 1957 – is seen as one of the most fascinating plays by Samuel Beckett. The production, the staging of Carlos Pimenta and the beautiful cast were the passport to a very enjoyable journey…

Ângela came with us

We already had an Azores’s representative, but we still had to raise Madeira’s flag. Ângela dos Vais found the air path to Lisbon and sighted The Square. In her baggage, besides a lot of class, brought experiences in journalism, digital communication and even in acting. Ângela likes ideas “out of the square” and to “get down to business”, so she could also be a carpenter – she says.

Behind the Square_5

(This is top secret)

Mission: recover the missiles TOP SECRET XJ7 plants, kept in a maximum-security vault, in the Parliamentary Building. Time: an hour. Details: locked in a cell. Result: we failed. “Lots of women mixed together”, say those who like gossip. But there’s no problem: we failed at an escape room mission, but we scored in an activity of team building that was a lot of fun and strengthen the team’s spirit.

Because summer isn’t just the beach…

We hope for a very hot summer, especially in the office… There are a lot of activities, launches and new challenges ahead, within and out of the four lines… We even need a bigger square, so we’re moving to a new office! The growth demands it… We are equally growing out of the square and Lisbon: after Aveiro and Oporto, we want (and are!) arriving at new territories. Soon we will share more news, but we leave this guarantee: our proactivity and focus are always the same!

See you soon!
